My bio

I am an award-winning web and print designer with over twelve years of experience. I specialise in front-end design and development, in addition to a variety of print media. I am very well-versed in HTML/CSS/LESS/JS/PHP/SQL and content management systems. I am passionate about designing and building great user experiences for digital and print, and am keen to use my skills to help improve the organisation that I work with.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science - University College Cork (UCC) Graduated in 2010 with a 2.1 degree My degree in Computer Science included many modules around general programming, algorithm design, database design and web technologies. During my time in university I focused on learning about web design, web development and multimedia technology. My final year project was web-based and was graded a 1.1. Hired as a front end web developer to work on various fast moving projects for a diverse range of internationally known clients. Work included:

  • Building websites in both static HTML/JS/JQUERY/CSS/LESS and in the Adobe Experience Manager CMS system
  • Working to extremely tight deadlines and delivering high quality products to our clients, ranging from single pages to entire corporate websites
  • Working with various teams within Black Sun to plan the development of these websites from inception to final content population and delivery
  • Quick problem solving, working on various websites to provide ongoing support to a massive host of clients

SpunOut.ie

Web Designer, Web Developer and Graphic Designer

Full time job 2013 - 2017

I was in charge of all the web design, web development and graphic design (digital and print) for this major Irish youth organisation. I was the sole developer, and all web/graphic work was carried out by me from initial concepts to final delivery. This included:

  • Managing and maintaining the existing website and internal CMS, using HTML / CSS / JS / JQUERY / PHP / SQL / Wordpress / ExpressionEngine
  • Designing and building new landing pages, microsites and internal web applications
  • Completely redesigning SpunOut.ie from the ground up, making a new website which was more accessible, faster and easier to maintain
  • Designing physical materials for the organisation including paperback books, posters, flyers, signage, magazines, reports and more
  • Managing SpunOut.ie’s substantial AdWords account and providing Google Analytic Reports
  • Helped in growing our web traffic from 50,000 visits per month in 2013, to 130,000 visits in 2017 through design, SEO and website improvements

Dublin LGBTQ Pride

Web Designer, Web Developer and Graphic Designer

Freelance 2012 - 2015, 2017 - 2020

At various points in the past five years I have worked with this non-profit organisation, the largest LGBTQ Pride Festival on the island of Ireland, to provide web design/development and graphic design assistance. My work included:

  • Designing and building the Dublin Pride website (currently online at www.DublinPride.ie). This was entirely designed and developed by me and is a custom WordPress template built in HTML/CSS. Which is also Google AMP compliant
  • Designing various digital assets for use in social media
  • Designing the annual Pride Guide for three years, which contains articles, advertisements and the entire events listings. The guide was 80 pages long in 2017 and 10,000 copies are printed for the festival

RealTalks.ie

Web Designer, Web Developer, Graphic Designer & Podcast Producer

Freelance position 2015 to present

I was asked by Alan O'Mara, GAA player and author, to help in establishing a brand for RealTalks. This organisation provides helps young people discuss and address their mental health through workshops and public speaking. The organisation also now has a sports podcast 'Real Talks with Alan O'Mara', which has been a huge success in 2017 frequently being in the iTunes top ten for podcasts. My work was considerable, in establishing the brand, web presence, graphic design and podcast production assistance. My responsibilities included:

  • Designing the overall brand and logo for RealTalks
  • Designing and building the website
  • All associated graphic design including brochures, posters, banners, business cards and booklets
  • Assisting in producing the podcast and bringing it to the thousands of listeners every week
  • Designing all social media and digital assets
  • Managing and updating the website on a weekly basis

USIT.ie

Web Developer and Graphic Designer

Full time job 2013 - 2017

Initially I was employed as a web developer who assisted in maintaining the USIT website, adding new assets and content. Later I expanded my role and became the lead graphic design for the entire organisation. My work included:

  • Maintaining the USIT website, keeping it up to date and making content additions
  • Designing all print marketing materials for the organisation such as posters, flyers, brochures, internal signage and branding
  • Designing digital assets for social media, newsletters, competitions and assets for use on the USIT website
  • Designing print advertising which was used in national campaigns
  • Designing and coding HTML marketing newsletters for the whole company across multiple

Awards

Student Leadership Award University College Cork 2010 This prestigious award is for students who have made outstanding contributions to student life in University College Cork. I was awarded this for my contribution to UCC Societies, the UCC Students Union and UCC Societies Guild over the course of my time in University. This award is one of the rare accomplishments that is recorded on a students academic transcript.


Best in Universal Design Irish Internet Association Net Visionary Awards 2016 This award was given to SpunOut.ie for my work in making SpunOut.ie accessible for as many users as possible. The website has been designed to work for screen readers with an adjustable font size and a high contrast mode. The nominees for this award were every single website nominated for any awards in the Irish Internet Association awards that year (60+).


Best Social Good Website Irish Internet Association Net Visionary Awards 2016 My SpunOut.ie website was awarded this for being the best website for a charity at the IIA awards in 2016.


Charity and Not-for-Profit Website - Nominated Golden Spider Awards 2016 The SpunOut.ie website was nominated for this award in 2016.


Best Web Only Publication Irish Web Awards 2016 SpunOut.ie was the recipient of this award in 2016 which honoured the organisation. I contributed to the success in this award with my efforts to make SpunOut.ie a better publishing platform, and improving the user experience.


Volunteer of the Year Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2013 I was given this award personally in 2013 for my efforts in assisting the Dublin LGBTQ Pride movement in 2013. My work that year included completing all web design, web development and graphic design for the festival which is the second largest in the country.


Honorary Lifetime Membership University College Cork Students' Union 2012The honorary lifetime membership awards are given out to reward individuals that have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to working for the best interests of students both within the University and externally. I was awarded this for my contribution to the UCC Students' Union over the course of my time at the university.


College Scholar University College Cork 2006 Awarded for academic performance in 2005 and 2006.


About me

My primary passion, which runs through all my work, is in making information understandable through clean and thoughtful design. During my time in UCC I was involved in numerous student organisations, committees and was elected the public relations officer of the UCC Societies Guild. My hobbies include travelling, gym (love a good spin class), coffee (always), memes, movies, music and technology.
